Koněpruské jeskyně

the most extensive cave complex in Czech Republic

Koněpruské jeskyně is the most extensive and longest cave complex in the Czech Republic situated approximately 40 kilometres (45-minute drive) south west of Prague, some 5 kilometres away from the district town of Beroun. It is located nearby the castles of Krivoklat and Karlstejn in the Nature Reserve of Czech Karst (CHKO Cesky kras).

This cave system was discovered in 1950 by accident near a quarry and has been mostly accessible since 1959 (excluding the lowest flooded level). This large complex of cave corridors composes of 3 floors with height difference between the individual levels of about 70 metres. The limestone caves are full of stalactites, and are also a site of a number of archeological finds, such as human and animal bones aged as old as 13 thousand years. The caves are accessible from April to October. Due to the fact that all caves are very high and wide, even visitors suffering from claustrophobia should have no problems entering the complex. There are, however, over 500 steps, which puts a strain on the visitors´ fitness. The caves are accessible from April to November and visitors can also take pictures for a small surcharge.
